Beating the Summer Heat
Senior Times - Columbus
by David Tramontana
Summer is here, which means lots of fun in the sun. Fresh air and exercise are good for all ages, especially for the senior population. More and more studies are showing the positive health & mental effects of physical activities. Staying physically active and exercising regularly can help prevent and delay many diseases and disabilities, not to mention just feeling better. However, the weather in Ohio can get extremely hot and quickly go from fun to dangerous, leading to heat related illnesses, which in the senior population is especially risky.
Staying Cool and Safe
The first rule to enjoying summer activities is staying cool and safe. Many of you will be attending the Ohio State Fair, right here in Columbus. While an extremely fun day for the entire family and a great place to take the senior in your life, keep in mind there should be some special accommodations made to keep this a fun and safe day. Here are some suggestions that will help you get through the day in an enjoyable way:
• Go to a cool place: Consider going to an air-conditioned event venues and display halls during the heat of the day.
• Stay in the shade: Visit the fair during cooler morning or evening hours, avoid being in the afternoon heat.
• Stay hydrated: Keep drinking plenty of water, even if you're not thirsty. Buy water often and avoid drinks with caffeine or alcohol.
• Limit physical activity: Take breaks during the day. Sit down or attend shows at the fair.
• Wear loose-fitting, lightweight clothing: Since you are going to be outside, don't forget to pack a hat or carry an umbrella to protect your loved one’s head and neck.
• Wear sunscreen: Protect the skin and reduce the risk of sunburn. Sunburn affects a body's ability to cool itself.
• Cool down: When you get home from the fair, suggest your loved one take a dip. A cool shower or bath is a great way to stay cool and much more effective than using an electric fan.
Beating the summer heat doesn’t have to be about staying indoors or being isolated. With a few precautions and planning, summer can be an engaging and fun time for seniors and families alike.
